These terms apply to all purchases of books sold through overtonsgarden.com. Membership benefits are sold via Substack and are governed by Substack's own terms — they're not covered here.
What you can buy
Overton's Garden is available in three formats:
- Print edition — paperback, shipped to your address
- Ebook — EPUB and PDF, delivered as a download via BookFunnel
- Audiobook — unabridged MP3, delivered as a download or via the BookFunnel listening app
Current prices are shown at checkout. I reserve the right to change prices at any time, but a price you've already paid is locked in for that order — I won't ask you for more later.
Pre-ordering the audiobook
The audiobook hasn't been released yet, so I'm accepting pre-orders for it. Pre-ordering means you're paying now for delivery on or shortly after its release date, and you're guaranteed first-day access.
When you'll be charged. Your card is charged at the time you place the order, not on release day. This is standard for direct-from-author pre-orders.
What happens between pre-order and release. Your order sits with me. I don't pass any of your details to the digital-delivery service (BookFunnel) until release day. You'll receive an order confirmation by email as soon as you order, and a notification once your audiobook has been activated.
Release dates
These are my current expected release dates. If they slip I'll tell you (see "Delivery delays" below).
- Print edition: 11 September 2026
- Ebook: 11 September 2026
- Audiobook: autumn 2026 (specific date to be announced)
Cancelling an order
Cancel any time before your order ships or activates, for a full refund — no questions asked. This is more generous than the law requires, but it's the right thing to do: you shouldn't be locked into a purchase that hasn't yet been delivered.
To cancel, email hello@overtonsgarden.com with your order number (in your confirmation email) and I'll process the refund. Refunds are issued back to the original payment method and typically appear within 5-10 working days.
Cancelling after delivery (your statutory right)
Under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 you have a statutory 14-day right to cancel distance purchases without giving a reason. The window runs:
- For print: from the day after the book arrives.
- For ebook and audiobook: from the day after your BookFunnel download link is activated (for anything ordered before its release date, that's on the release date).
To exercise this right, email hello@overtonsgarden.com within 14 days. For print, you'll need to send the book back to me (I'll provide the return address); I'll refund the price plus the basic delivery cost within 14 days of receiving the book, or within 14 days of receiving evidence you've sent it, whichever is sooner. For digital, I'll refund within 14 days of you exercising the right. You don't need to give a reason.
You may lose this right for digital content if you've expressly asked for immediate access and acknowledged that this waives the cancellation right. I don't offer this option — your right runs from delivery as above.
Refunds
Refunds always go back to the original payment method. I process them as quickly as possible — usually within a few working days, always within 14 days of cancellation. Your bank or card issuer may take a few additional working days to make the money visible on your statement.
If I cancel an order (for example, because I can't fulfil it for some reason), I'll refund you in full within 14 days.
Delivery
Print, UK addresses: orders are batched and dispatched via my UK print partner. Once dispatched, expect delivery within 3-7 working days depending on Royal Mail / courier capacity. Delivery costs are shown at checkout.
Print, EU addresses: sadly, I'm not currently able to post paperbacks to addresses in the European Union. Since July 2026, a book posted from the UK to the EU attracts import VAT, a customs duty and a carrier handling fee on delivery, which together come close to the price of the book. For now, EU readers can buy the paperback from Amazon's EU stores. Amazon shows any import taxes and charges at checkout, so they're reflected in the price before you order. The ebook and audiobook are unaffected and can still be bought here.
Print, other international addresses: your copy is printed in the UK and posted to you, so it has to clear customs on the way. Depending on your country, the carrier may ask you to pay import VAT, a small customs duty, and their own handling fee before they release the parcel. These charges are set by the destination country, not by me. Expect 7-21 working days from dispatch, depending on your country and customs processing.
Ebook and audiobook: delivered as download links via BookFunnel. If you order before a format's release date, your link activates automatically on that date. You'll receive an email when your downloads are ready.
Shipping costs. The shipping rates shown at checkout are what it costs to get a copy to your address. I may revise them up or down for future orders as my print partners' rates change. The rate you see and pay at checkout is the rate that applies to your order — I won't ask you for more later, and a rate already paid won't be retroactively changed.
I aim to deliver every order within 30 days of release. If I can't, you have the right under UK consumer law to cancel and receive a full refund (see "Delivery delays" below).
Delivery delays
If I can't deliver by the expected release date plus a reasonable additional period (I'll keep you informed), you can:
- Wait for delivery and I'll provide updates as I have them, or
- Cancel your order and receive a full refund within 14 days.
You can ask for either at hello@overtonsgarden.com. If a delay is caused by something genuinely beyond my control (printer failure, courier disruption, a global event) I'll do everything I can to keep you informed and offer cancellation as above.
If your book arrives faulty or damaged
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 you have the right to a refund, repair, or replacement if a book arrives faulty, damaged, or significantly different from how it was described.
For print, if a copy arrives damaged in transit or with a printing fault, email hello@overtonsgarden.com within 30 days with a photograph and I'll arrange a replacement or refund. You don't need to return the damaged copy unless I ask you to.
For digital, if a file is corrupted, unreadable, or missing, contact me and I'll fix the issue or refund you.
Liability
To the extent permitted by law, my liability to you for any single order is limited to the price you paid for that order. Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by my negligence, fraud, or anything else that can't be excluded under UK law.
Force majeure
I'm not liable for failure to perform my obligations if doing so is prevented by something genuinely outside my reasonable control — for example, postal strikes, supply-chain disruption, fire, flood, government action, or pandemic restrictions. In such cases I'll keep you informed and offer cancellation with a full refund if delivery becomes substantially delayed.
Changes to these terms
I may update these terms from time to time. The version that applies to your order is the one published when you placed the order — I won't change the rules on you retroactively. The current version is always at overtonsgarden.com/terms.

Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and any dispute will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland and there's a mandatory consumer protection that applies to you, nothing in these terms removes that protection.
You also have the right to use online dispute resolution platforms where these are available in your country, but for UK residents the ICO and Citizens Advice are the primary routes for consumer disputes.
